Could this be "The Greatest Year in Sports"?!

Think about it...
We're halfway through, and what has this year brought us already:

NFL
The 18-0 Patriots lose to the underdog wild-card NY Giants in one of the best 4th quarters in Superbowl history (arguably the best one).

NBA
Classic finals showdown of the best 2 teams in basketball, the Boston Celtics and the LA Lakers. Kobe didn't want the action to end, so he headed for Denver after Game 6.

NHL
The best 2 teams, the Detroit Red Wings and Pittsburgh Penguins meet in the Stanley Cup Finals. People actually watch hockey for the first time in years.

NCAA Football
LSU, who arguably should not have been in the BCS Championship game, throttles #1 Ohio State, and makes all college football fans outside of the state of Ohio very happy.

NCAA Basketball
Kansas comes back from 9 points down with less than 2 minutes to tie #1 Memphis, and wins a thriller in OT. Honourable mention to "Cinderalla" Davidson making the Elite 8.

NCAA Baseball
Unseeded under"dawg" Fresno St. becomes the lowest ranked college team to win any championship...ever!

Golf:
Tiger Woods wins the U.S. Open basically on one leg, in dramatic fashion in 91 holes over Rocco Mediate. Michelle Wie claims that she can beat Tiger Woods heads up. I claim that she should win a tournament, ANY (L)PGA tournament. (No, her amateur win 5 years ago does not count).

Tennis:
Rafael Nadal overtakes Roger Federer as the best tennis player in the world in one of the best tennis matches of all time, a 4 1/2 hour, 5 set Wimbledon Final. The Williams sisters also become the best 2 siblings in sports history (both are top 10 all-time in their sport).

Soccer:
England does not qualify for Euro 2008. Spain lays a smackdown on the favorite Germans to win for the first time in 50 years. Graeme Ivory's face appears on local milk cartons.

Horse Racing:
Big Brown contends for the Triple Crown and PETA reminds the world how they are extremist idiots (again).

Athletics:
New World Record in 100m Men's Track & Field.
Some other people win some stuff. And seriously, is swimming really a sport??

What could still happen:

Nevermind that the OLYMPICS are this summer! The Ryder Cup will be happening in September. The Cubs have one of the best records in baseball, and could be headed for a World Series win, 100 years since their last Series win. Also great to see small market teams like Tampa Bay, Florida, Minnesota, Oakland, Milwaukee, etc. playing better baseball than the NY Yankees.

Don't forget that we still have a full NFL season, NCAA Football season, and the end of the NASCAR season to deal with. It really could be the greatest year in sports when all is said and done. Enjoy!
